Lounge 1, 2 and 3, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol
Lounge 1 in the Schengen area of the airport has been expanded and renovated. At its centre an open space is ringed with shops, bars and restaurants that all passengers have to cross to reach the planes. The blue glass screen of the food court jutting into the space makes special play of light and colour. Most of the flooring consists of black granite composite tiles gritted with mirror flecks. The departure halls lend identity to the open space with colour, texture and dimensions. Light lines in the floor strengthen this effect and add to the haphazard orientation desired here.
Lounge 2, the central lounge of the airport originally built in 1976, has been expanded. By this expansion the volume of the lounge has doubled. To use the limited space in the heart of the airport at best, the new expansion floats above the service roads for the flight platforms. Steel constructions with great spans support steel plate concrete floors used for the floors and the roof. The possibility to make a line for an automatic passengers transport system on the roof of the building, is allocated in the construction. A spectacular new tax-free shopping centre of the British designers Virgile & Stone, is integrated in the lounge. On top of the lounge a panorama terrace has been created and recreants are able to see a glimpse of the new shopping centre through the roof lights.
In the former Lounge 3 the spaciousness and overview was lost because it got dense with commerce and catering over the years. Since approximately 5.3 million passengers use this lounges annually and this number is expected to increase, an adaption of the lounge was desirable. Lounge 3 has been transformed in a spacious, uncluttered and bright space with more commercial area. The design scheme incorporates perforated steel elements with champagne-coloured finish. This creates a dynamic image that allows the stores and their signing to be clearly visible. The balustrades upstairs are speckled reflective to clearly mark their presence and the routing for the passengers is very clear. The new Lounge 3 is a lively environment in which passengers can feel at home, relax, work or shop.
